[ About the Place ]

This old house is located on the vast ground of the east foot of Yeongnamsan Mountain in Andong along the small valley. Lee Hu-sik (1653~1714), the 11th ancestor of present owner, had built an inner wing and a drawing room wing in the reign of King Sukjong of Joseon, but it had not completed. So, his grandson, Lee Won-mi built the rest of it and the main hall, Yeongmodang Hall. A little north away from the main hall, Bukjeong Pavilion was built in the 51st year of King Yeongjo (1775). It was greatly modified in the 24th year of King Sunjo (1824), while a room in the inner wing was reconstructed in 1991. Entering the jungmungan which erected on an embankment made of various stones, there is a square garden and relatively spacious inner wing circling the garden. In the left side of the inner wing, there is a drawing room wing with a tablet titled 'Jeongwujae' at wooden floor room. A main hall, an annexed building with a large pond in front, has a tablet titled 'Yeongmodang'. Bukjeong Pavilion, facing the valley in the west, ㅁ-shaped pavillion. There is a shrine on the right side of inner wing. This is a typical house of yangban (the elite) in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. The mountain-side house is well harmonized with the building and the natural environment. With a peculiar layout and method and traditional style well preserved, this house is important to study for traditional residences.

Andong has three traditional markets(permanent market) to show life style, custom and habits of local people. In traditional markets, local produced fruits, vegetables, seafood, agricultural and marine products and blankets, cushions, pillows, clothes, jewelry are being sold. Opening hours are generally 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. but slightly different according to the each market. Let's visit the traditional market to buy local product and experience the real life of Andong.
