Description
Located in front of the Garden of Morning Calm (Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do), Chiong Art Center is a cultural hotspot for residents in northeast Gyeonggi-do. There are a number of indoor and outdoor exhibition halls open year-round, where Korean and international artists can exhibit their work at no cost. The center offers a variety of workshops and seminars that let visitors experience traditional Korean music, painting, and tea etiquette. Based on an extensive background of studying and touring Hanok (traditional Korean houses) for the past two decades, the center also provides aspiring architects with an opportunity to learn how to build Hanok.
Chiong Art Center runs two lodging facilities called Suhyangheon and Baeksongjae. Suhyangheon gives guests a chance to experience Korean Ondol, the traditional floor heating system in which wood is burned to heat water pipes running beneath the floorboards. Baeksongjae, on the other hand, is ideal for those who appreciate traditional Hanok, and even has a seminar room that can seat up to 80 guests.
The buildings and facilities of the Chiong Art Center are separated into two main areas. The first area has three houses, the Cheongryujeong Pavilion, Museum, and Daseokjisil (an additional exhibition hall and a tea house), while the second area includes Seokidang (a restaurant and a seminar room), Suhyangheon, and Baeksongjae. Situated among the foothills of beautiful Chukryeongsan Mountain, the center is filled with the sweet fragrance of mountainside wild flowers and pine trees all year-round.
Of course, the art center offers abundant opportunities for visitors to learn about traditional Korean culture. Programs include Pansori (vocal/percussion music), Minyo (folk music), and Samulnori (percussion music). There is also a Korean restaurant on the grounds that offers delicious dishes made using fresh wild greens.
Rooms are 70,000 won
