영남사림학파의 종조 점필재 김종직의 후손들이 모여사는 개실마을. 정겨운 돌담길과 한옥이 만들어낸 선들이 아름다운 마을이다. 전통 한과를 만드는 곳으로도 유명한 이곳에 화산재가 있다. 마을의 중심을 형성하는 점필재 종택의 왼쪽, 김종직의 유덕을 기리기 위해 지방 유림들이 세운 강학 장소 도연재 옆 골목으로 올라가면 곧은 길 끝자락에 화산재가 있다.
입구에 돈경문이라 적힌 현판을 단 대문을 들어서면 넓은 마당이 펼쳐지고 정면에 화산재라는 현판을 단 본채가 있고 오른쪽에는 전통혼례체험장으로 사용되는 별채가 있다. 민박으로 사용되는 본채는 막돌로 쌓은 기단 위에 정면 6칸에 측면 2칸으로 세운 규모 있는 건물이다. 보통의 집들이 사각기둥을 쓰는 데 반해, 궁궐이나 대갓집에서나 사용하던 둥근 나무 기둥을 사용한 것만 보아도 이 건물의 위세가 당당했음을 짐작할 수 있다. 왼편 2칸이 대청마루이고 그 옆으로 큰방 2개가 나란히 붙어 있다. 마루에서 마을 앞의 들녘과 강이 내려다보여 전망이 좋은 곳이기도 하다.
화산재에서 민박을 하면서 마을 훈장으로부터 전통예절문화를 배울 수 있으며 한과, 엿, 두부, 칼국수 등 전통 음식 체험도 할 수 있다.

Gaesil Village has been home the descendants of Sir Mungchunggong, Jong Jik Kim (Jeompiljae), the founder of the Yeongnam Academic Sect, for the last 350 years.The village offers sound leisure activities and farm experience programs to visitors from the city, and promotes campaigns to improve the income and quality of life for the local people and preserve the traditional culture for the next generations. Eleven traditional homes have been renovated into hostels for visitors.
