[ Suncheon Bay ]
Suncheon Bay is most famous for its vast reed fields, the largest of its kind within the nation. These reed fields stretch all the way from Gyoryang-dong and Daedae-dong to Jungheung-ri, Haechang-ri and Seonhak-ri of Haeryong-myeon, covering a total area of 150,000 pyeong. The reed fields begin at the point where the Dongcheon and Isacheon meet, and continue toward the ocean, covering both sides of the 3㎞ waterway.
Tourists will be left speechless by the sight of the reeds dancing in the wind, and the sunlight reflecting against the fields, bursting into rich colors of gold, silver and grey
But do not be mistaken by thinking that the reed fields are all that the Suncheon Bay has to offer. While visitors will surely be amazed by the reed fields surrounding the docks of Daedae-dong, the vast mud flats near Waon-maeul of Sangnae-ri Haeryong-myeon are also a popular site for tourists and photographers because of its breathtaking scenery at sunset. The 39.8 km-long coastline and its 27 square kilometers of wetlands (including 21.6㎢ of mud flats and 5.4㎢ of reed fields) contribute to the beauty of the region as well
The Suncheon Bay is a home to a countless number of plants and animals. Patches of silver grass, asters, and seepweeds( Suaeda japonica Makino) can easily found within the region. Rare birds and natural monuments, such as the hooded cranes, white-naped cranes, storks, and black-faced spoonbills inhabit the region. In addition, over 140 different species of birds, including longbills, mallards, shelducks, and wild geese live within the region, making Suncheon Bay one of the richest natural habitats in the world.
